DEMATHIEU BARD has completed the structural works phase for the future CIRC headquarters in Lyon, east-central France.
Teams from BLB CONSTRUCTIONS have completed the structural works phase for the future International Cancer Research Center (CIRC) headquarters in Lyon, east-central France. The first stone was laid in January 2020.
A designed-build contract
The Metropolis of Lyon awarded the design-build contract for the CIRC headquarters to BLB CONSTRUCTIONS in a consortium with ArtBuild Architects, Unanime Architectes, WSP and Inddigo. Innovative, distinctive, and symbolizing the renewal and dynamism of their research, this five-story building features a concrete structure and wooden-framed patio, and will ultimately accommodate more than 300 researchers from all around the world in its spacious offices and laboratories, along with one of Europe’s largest biobanks, containing over 10 million samples.
The project includes:
– a single main structure containing the research spaces and administration;
– storage spaces and the biobank;
– a circular patio that facilitates fluid communications between teams on the different levels;
– a shared garden at the center of the patio.
A headquarters biomimetically designed
The future CIRC headquarters is entirely biomimetically designed:
– the building’s exterior facade uses thermochromic glass that darkens when the glass temperature increases, enabling a 30% reduction in climate control needs;
– bimetallic flowers on the facades of the inner courtyard retract in cold conditions and expand when warm to act as a sun screen;
– a landscaped roof and photovoltaic panels in addition to the biomimetic solutions make the CIRC a truly exemplary building.
The works are scheduled for completion in September 2022.
